Overcoming Anger and Emotional Eating

Posted: Jan 27 in Weight Loss Blog tagged , by

Attempting a weight loss program without addressing the underlying causes of weight gain has led many people down a path of frustration and hopelessness. Weight loss medications in Naperville can help you to lose weight, but you will need to work on stopping the emotional need to eat as well. One of the most common problems regarding weight gain is the use of food as an escape from negative emotions. Anger, for instance, is a normal emotion that everyone experiences from time to time. Like fear, it is a reaction to an external stimulus, and the actual feeling is out of our control.

Unfortunately, many associate anger with negative behaviors that they have experienced in the past. Shutting down emotionally, screaming, and physical violence are all possible reactions to anger, not the feeling itself. A strong association of the feeling with these behaviors can naturally lead to a person suppressing the feeling, and one tactic of doing so is with emotional eating.

Giving Yourself the Freedom to Feel

Ending the negative cycle of emotional eating is more or less difficult for an individual depending on how ready they are to own the emotion. Part of this is the need for a strong sense of self, which is simply the recognition that you are more than a momentary emotion. Anger will come and go throughout life, and every time the feeling passes, the person still remains.

Another important realization is a feeling is just that and nothing more. Stepping back from a situation, accepting that the anger is real and there for a reason, and then choosing what to do with it is a formula for processing emotions in a healthy manner. Trying to suppress anger often causes stress. Denying the cause of anger creates a downward spiral of increasing negativity and more emotional eating.

Everyone gets angry and, consciously or not, must answer these two questions. How will the feeling be handled? What behavior will be chosen to express it? Past associations with anger can set up a major roadblock to making conscious decisions regarding these two questions. However, it is necessary to end the negative cycles.

Participants in these classes use small individual trampolines, not the large backyard trampolines you may be familiar with, and the aim of the class is to jump in time with the rest of the class, focusing on landing at the right time, rather than on how high you can jump. Of course to make it more interesting there are also some twists and other moves thrown in besides the basic jump. You may have so much fun jumping on the trampoline you don’t even feel like you are exercising.
